Sen. King Praises Washington, D.C. Interns

WASHINGTON, D.C. –As the first season for congressional internships draws to a close, U.S. Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-Maine) today praised interns Julia Isaacson of Cumberland and Carly Applebaum of Falmouth for their fantastic work in his Washington, D.C. office. Julia, a sophomore at Dartmouth College, and Carly, a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, were selected to participate in Senator King’s internship program in November 2012.  The internship provided them with an exciting and valuable opportunity to gain first-hand experience working in the nation’s capital. They each were entrusted with a wide range of responsibilities, including recording constituent concerns, answering phones, drafting letters, giving tours of the U.S. Capitol, and helping coordinate Senator King’s weekly Capitol Coffee with Angus.

Carly, who will be continuing in her capacity for another season, was motivated to pursue her internship by a desire to bring the value of politics to light at a time when many feel disenchanted by the current partisan atmosphere. She said, “Politics affects everything, so no matter what your interests are or what your profession is, what happens in politics has an impact on your life.” Julia hopes her time in D.C. will provide her with a behind-the-scenes view of America’s legislative process, as well as a better understanding of the type of work she wants to pursue after Dartmouth.

However, what both are most excited about is the opportunity to work for and support Senator King. “Mainers don’t necessarily fit into either political party and he gets that, which is why his status as an Independent is so important” said Carly. Similarly, Julia noted, “This is a monumental moment for Maine and the country. Senator King is not your typical politician – his common sense proposals are just what we need right now.”

“It’s been wonderful to have Carly and Julia as a part of my team in Washington,” said Senator King. “They’re both incredibly talented and have been exceptional in their work on behalf of me and the people of Maine. I look forward to having Carly stay on with us and I wish Julia all the best in her future endeavors.”
