In February Podcast, King Discusses Importance of Maine’s Rural Economy

“Processes like the EDAT are what gave us the courage to purchase the mill”- Sean DeWitt, Our Katahdin

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) today released the February edition of his podcast, Inside Maine, which focuses on importance of Maine’s rural economy and the forest products industry. In the podcast, Senator King interviews Dana Doran, Executive Director of the Professional Logging Contractors of Maine, and Sean DeWitt, founder of Our Katahdin, a volunteer-driven nonprofit working to promote and expand economic development in the Katahdin region.

“One of the hard parts about the loss of the paper mills that we’ve had is that they’ve taken place in places where there aren’t a lot of the options for employment in the rural areas of the state,” Senator King said. “So I consider this a key part of a rural redevelopment initiative. I’m thinking about all kinds of things – broadband and work at home and training and all of those things. I’ve spent a lot of time in the last six months in places like Milo, Rumford and Dixfield and we’ve really got to help revitalize those communities. They are wonderful places to live, great people, but you have to have jobs up there. So that’s what’s so exciting to me about all of this that we’re talking about – we’re focused on the areas that really need the jobs.”

The “Inside Maine Podcast with Senator Angus King” is a 30-minute program that aims to help keep Maine people informed about issues of the day, how they affect life in the state, and how they factor into Senator King’s work as one of two independents in the U.S. Senate. Senator King’s podcast builds on his existing radio show that airs on Newsradio WGAN in Portland, Maine between 10 and 11 a.m. on almost every last Saturday of the month.
