King Renews Call for Long-Term Solution to Highway Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) released the following statement after the Senate early this morning passed a short-term extension of the Highway Trust Fund:

“By not fixing this problem once and for all, we’re shifting debt onto future generations who are going to have to reach into their pockets to fix what we refused to. And what’s more, we’re holding our country back. We’re stifling job creation, hampering economic growth, and putting Americans lives at risk by not repairing dangerous roads and bridges.” Senator King said. “I’m disappointed that Congress continues to kick the can down the road when it comes to investing in our transportation infrastructure. If we keep up this shortsighted, piecemeal approach, we’re not even going to have a road to kick the can down. I will continue to press my colleagues to find a responsible, long-term solution to this problem that will put us on a path to repairing our infrastructure and fostering economic growth.”

Senator King has long called on Congress to pass a long-term solution to support the Highway Trust Fund rather than continue to pass short-term extensions. As a member of the Former Governors Caucus, King has been working with several of his fellow former governors in the Senate to highlight the need to invest in our nation’s transportation infrastructure.
